About this metric
This is the average number of hours people actually worked per week in their jobs, not the hours set by contracts. The chart shows it for all workers and separately for women and men, from 2008 to 2024.
In 2024 people worked 41.1 hours a week on average, the most of the years shown: men 44.1 hours, women 37.3 hours, a gap of 6.8 hours. The lowest average was 35 hours in 2009.
The average rose from 37.8 hours in 2020 to 41.1 in 2024. Women's average was 30.2 hours in 2010 and 37.3 in 2024. The series jumps in 2014 (41 hours, up from 36.5 in 2013) and falls back to 38.7 in 2015, and the survey methodology was revised in 2018, so single-year changes should be read with care.
