About this metric
Informal employment means work without the legal and social protection of a formal job. The chart shows its share of all employment, and separately in agriculture and in other sectors, from 2008 to 2024.
In 2024 the overall rate was 32.4%, the lowest of the years shown, down from 50.6% in 2008 and a peak of 52.1% in 2009. In agriculture almost all work is informal: 95.7% in 2024, and never below 94.1%. Outside agriculture the rate was 16.1% in 2024, against 22% in 2008.
The overall rate fell from 43.5% in 2018 to 38% in 2019 and 35.2% in 2020, stayed between 35.1% and 35.5% through 2023, and then dropped to 32.4% in 2024. Armstat revised the labour force survey methodology in 2018, so figures before and after are not strictly comparable.
