Marital status shows how people aged 15 and over live as couples. The chart shows the number of people in each marital status, according to the 2022 census.
Just over half of them, 55% (1,306,796 people), were in a registered marriage. A further 161,676 people lived in a marriage that is not registered, and 12,566 were married only by a church rite.
573,356 people had never married, just under a quarter (24%). 242,495 were widowed and 69,903 were divorced.
