Public Finances

The state collects taxes and other revenue and spends it on schools, hospitals, roads, pensions and defence. When spending exceeds revenue, the gap is covered by borrowing, which has to be repaid later.

This section is about public finances: budget revenue and spending, taxes, the budget deficit and public debt, and how much the state pays to borrow. Together these indicators show how sound the state's finances are.
