About this metric
This metric compares how prices changed each year for farmers selling their produce and for shoppers buying food. One line shows the sale prices of agricultural products (crops and livestock), the other the shop prices of food, both as the change from the previous year, from 1998 to 2025.
Farm prices swing much more. They ranged from a fall of 19.5% in 2015 to a rise of 32.0% in 2010, while shop food prices ranged from a fall of 3.9% in 1999 to a rise of 12.5% in 2022. Farm prices fell in 13 of the 28 years, shop food prices in 5 (1999, 2000, 2009, 2016 and 2024), and in each of those years farm prices fell too.
The two moved closely in recent years. In 2022 farm prices rose by 13.4% and shop food prices by 12.5%. In 2025 farm prices rose by 4.7% and shop food prices by 5.1%.
